Westminster Book Group

Who We Are

August marked the one-year anniversary of the WV Book Group. We discuss a book each month on the fourth Thursday at 10:00 am. Most months we meet in the Saguaro Lounge. Currently there are 20 members.

Our group is unique because rather than purchase the books that we read, we use the Scottsdale Public Library’s “Book Club to Go” program. They have over 150 “book kits” to choose from. The typical “kit” contains 10 books and a study guide. It may even include a DVD if the book has been made into a movie.

At our initial meeting, we selected a half dozen books to read; more titles have been added since. The librarians tell us there is funding for more kits in the new budget that took effect in July, so we’re looking forward to getting some more recent titles.

Literary Adventures

Because we often have twice as many members as books in the kit, it involves sharing. Since some members may have already read the book, are very fast readers, choose to obtain an audio or kindle version, or prefer to purchase a copy, the system has worked. So far, we have been able to provide a book monthly to each member that needed a copy.

Naturally, there have been a couple snafus. Coordinating with the library hasn’t always gone smoothly, so we have ended up with a different book than expected. Thanks to everyone’s patience, it has worked out. The one unfortunate thing is we can no longer promise to lend new members a book. If anyone has already read it or wants to obtain their own copy, they are welcome to join the discussion.
