Paws and Protection: Keeping Pets Safe in the Summer Heat

At Westminster Village, we know pets are more than companions. They’re part of the family. They bring joy, comfort, and, according to countless studies, they even help us live longer, happier lives. Pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure, reduced stress, and increased physical activity, all of which contribute to better health and well-being.

As temperatures climb this summer, it’s important to remember that our furry friends feel the heat even more than we do. Here are a few key reminders to help keep pets safe and comfortable during the hottest months of the year:

  • Hydration is essential. Pets need more water in the summer. Always ensure they have access to fresh, cool water. A healthy dog can drink up to one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day, and even more in extreme heat.
  • Sidewalks can burn paws. On a 95-degree day, asphalt can reach 140 degrees in minutes. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s feet. Opt for grassy areas and walk early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Never leave pets in parked cars. Even with cracked windows, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 120 degrees in just 10 minutes. This can quickly become life-threatening.
  • Know the signs of overheating. Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing can indicate heatstroke. Move your pet to a cool place, offer water, and contact a veterinarian immediately if symptoms appear.

At Westminster Village, we’re proud to be a pet-friendly community with a dedicated enclosed pet park, complete with a hydration station. We understand the important role pets play in daily life, and we’re committed to making sure they feel just as welcome here as their humans.

So this summer, let’s all do our part to keep pets cool, safe, and thriving. A healthy pet means a happier person, and a happier person helps create the kind of strong, connected community we’re proud to call home.
