Moai Matters: Sharing Purpose, Connection, and a Few Laughs
In Blue Zones communities, those rare regions around the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives, a powerful tradition exists called a moai (pronounced mo-eye). Originally from Okinawa, a moai is a small, committed social group that regularly meets to support one another, share life’s joys and challenges, and strengthen their sense of connection and purpose.
At Westminster Village, a dedicated group of residents and employees gathers monthly to do just that. Rooted in Blue Zones principles, this group explores the nine pillars of longevity and well-being. This month, the focus was on one of the most meaningful pillars: purpose.
It’s a simple idea with profound impact. Research shows that having a clear sense of purpose can add up to seven years to your life and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cognitive decline.
During the group discussion, participants shared reflections, from volunteering with neighbors to tending patio gardens, mentoring others, or even learning something new. These are all small yet meaningful ways to live with purpose, actions that help shape a longer, richer, more fulfilling life.
At Westminster Village, we are proud to foster these opportunities, where purpose is not only discovered but celebrated in community. Whether through conversations, creative pursuits, or simple daily routines, purpose becomes not just a personal goal, but a shared journey.
